What is a call to action?

The short answer: A call to action is the specific next step a page asks the visitor to take: book a call, get the quote, start the trial. It is the hinge between someone reading about your business and someone becoming a customer, and most pages fail by asking vaguely, asking too late, or asking for three things at once.

One page, one ask

A page with two competing asks converts worse than a page with one, because every additional choice invites deferral. Decide the single action that page exists to produce, make it a visible button in the first screen, repeat it after the proof, and let everything else on the page argue for it. Secondary links belong in the footer, not next to the money button.

Words that work

Specific beats clever. Start the ask with the verb of the outcome, tell them what happens next, and defuse the fear in the fine print underneath. Our contact page says what the thirty minutes is and what it is not, and the button under a call to action like that carries far more intent than a generic submit ever will.

Placement and honesty

The ask should arrive right after the visitor has a reason to say yes: after the promise, after the proof, after the price shape. And it must be honest. A button that says free consult leading to a sales ambush trains visitors to distrust every button after it.

Questions people ask

One ask, repeated. Top, after the proof, and at the end. Repetition of the same ask is rhythm; different asks are noise.

Contrast and visibility matter; the specific color is folklore. The words on the button and what sits directly above it matter far more.

The lowest-friction step that still signals intent, usually a short call or a quote request with minimal fields. Asking for the wedding on the first date suppresses response.
