What is NAP consistency?

The short answer: NAP stands for name, address, phone number, and NAP consistency means those three details are written identically everywhere your business appears online: your site, Google, directories, social profiles. Inconsistent NAP makes search engines less certain you are one legitimate business, and uncertainty costs local rankings.

Why identical matters

Search engines assemble trust in a local business by cross-referencing mentions across the web. When one directory says Suite 200, another says Ste. 200 with an old phone number, and your footer spells the name differently, the signals fragment across what might be one business or three. Fragmented signals mean diluted prominence, and prominence is a third of the local ranking equation.

Where inconsistencies breed

Old phone numbers from a tracking-number experiment, moves that updated Google but not the forty directories nobody remembers signing up for, rebrands that left the old name scattered around, and franchise-style duplicates created by data aggregators. Every abandoned profile keeps broadcasting stale facts on your behalf.

The cleanup that sticks

Fix the canonical trio first, your website footer, Google Business Profile, and the top handful of directories for your industry, then work outward through the long tail once. After the cleanup, protect it: one documented format for the name, address, and phone, used verbatim everywhere, forever. This is unglamorous work, which is exactly why doing it is an edge.

Questions people ask

Minor formatting variations are mostly tolerated now, but wrong numbers, old addresses, and name variants genuinely hurt. Aim for identical anyway; it costs nothing and removes doubt.

Quality beats count. Google, the majors, and the directories your industry actually uses. A hundred junk citations help less than ten clean authoritative ones.

Not on your Google profile or major citations. Use tracking numbers on ads and landing pages where they do not pollute your canonical identity.
