What is an open rate?

The short answer: Open rate is the percentage of delivered emails that recipients opened. It is a useful first signal of subject-line and sender-trust health, and an increasingly fuzzy one: privacy features now inflate opens, so it should steer curiosity, not strategy.

What opens can and cannot tell you

A collapsing open rate says something real: subject lines losing the inbox battle, sends landing in spam, or a list that has stopped caring. A high open rate says less than it used to, because mail privacy features preload messages and register opens no human made. Treat opens as a smoke detector, sensitive but imprecise, and never as the scoreboard.

The metrics that pay the bills

Clicks show genuine interest. Replies show engagement no bot fakes. And downstream actions, bookings made, quotes accepted, lapsed clients returning, are the actual point of sending. One rebooking from a win-back email outweighs any vanity open percentage, which is why our email builds measure sequences in revenue events, not opens.

Raising the honest version

Send to people who asked, from a name they recognize, about things tied to their actual relationship with you. Subject lines that say plainly what is inside beat clever ones over time, because trust compounds and clickbait spends it. Prune the disengaged regularly; a smaller list that opens protects deliverability for everyone else.

Questions people ask

Small engaged lists commonly see strong rates, but privacy inflation makes absolute numbers unreliable. Watch your own trend and your click-through instead.

Usually deliverability: a spam-folder shift from authentication problems, a spike in complaints, or a stale list segment. Check the technical health before rewriting subject lines.

Sparingly, with a changed subject and only for genuinely important messages. Habitual resending trains recipients to ignore the first send.
