The race for artificial intelligence supremacy has shifted from the coasts to the industrial heartland of America. OpenAI is expanding its “Stargate” initiative to Michigan with a one‑gigawatt AI supercomputing campus that will create thousands of jobs, attract billions in investment, and anchor the future of AI development in the Midwest.
OpenAI, together with state officials, announced a $100 billion investment over the next decade. The campus will sit in the newly designated Willow Run Innovation Corridor and will be powered by a strategic partnership with DTE Energy, which will develop renewable sources to meet the facility’s power demands.
The site will host OpenAI’s upcoming “Aethelred” series of AI accelerators, built for training foundation models at unprecedented scale.
A closed‑loop liquid‑cooling system will manage the heat generated by the dense computing cluster, enabling safe and reliable AI development.
Collaboration with the University of Michigan and other regional institutions will create a talent pipeline for the 2,000 high‑tech jobs expected at the campus, establishing a thriving Midwest AI Hub.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer highlighted Michigan’s convergence of engineering talent, manufacturing excellence, and commitment to clean energy as the key reasons for the location choice. The project aims to decentralize tech innovation, distribute economic opportunity, and secure America’s leadership in AI.
