The local SEO work that actually moves rankings

Local SEO advice has a shelf-life problem. Most of what you'll read is a checklist that was true once: stuff keywords in your business name, spam citations everywhere, write a city-name paragraph on every page. Do that today and you'll wait a year to discover it did nothing.

We run local SEO for our own San Diego businesses, which means we feel every ranking move in the bank account, not in a client report. Here's where the movement actually came from.

1. The business profile is the homepage now

For local searches, most customers never reach your website. They see the map pack, the photos, the reviews, the hours, and they call. Your Google Business Profile deserves the energy you've been giving your homepage: real photos updated monthly, services listed the way customers phrase them, every attribute filled, posts that show the business is alive.

2. Reviews are a system, not a hope

The business that asks every happy customer beats the business with better work and no system. Every time.

Review velocity, the steady drip of new reviews, is the strongest local signal we can influence. The fix is never "ask harder." It's wiring the ask into the moment of delight: the delivery email, the job-complete text. When we built the ask into a delivery flow instead of a memory, reviews stopped being a quarterly favor and became a weekly event.

3. One page per service, written like you mean it

A services list is not a services page. Each thing you do deserves its own page that answers what a buyer actually asks: what's included, what it costs or how pricing works, how fast, why you. Thin city-keyword pages are dead weight; genuinely useful service pages are how you show up for "drone photography San Diego" instead of just your brand name.

4. Fix the boring technical debt

Slow pages, broken links, missing schema, duplicate site versions: none of it is glamorous, and all of it is a ceiling on everything else. We've watched clean technical foundations turn the same content from invisible to ranking. This is also where working with people who write code pays off, because the audit ends in fixes, not a PDF.

The receipt: when we launched our studio's site properly (real service pages, clean schema, review flow wired to delivery), it went from not-indexed to owning its brand searches and competing on money keywords, with zero dollars of ad spend involved.

The order matters

Profile first, review system second, service pages third, technical cleanup throughout. Skip the order and you'll polish a profile nobody can find or rank pages nobody converts on. Do it in order and each layer compounds the last.

Questions people ask

Profile and review improvements can move map-pack visibility in weeks. Organic page rankings typically take a few months of consistent work. Anyone promising page one in two weeks is selling something.

Not first. A complete profile, a review system, and real service pages beat a blog every time. Content helps once the foundation exists.

Consistency matters more than volume: identical name, address, and phone on the platforms that count. A hundred junk directories move nothing.
